From the age of three I have never been without a bike! whilst not keen on team sports the bike has always been a constant as a form of exercise and freedom.

I started mountain biking in the early 80’s and in the last ten years competed in many non competative enduro’s, after a slight self inflicted mountain bike accident I decided to buy a road bike to keep up the fitness from that day on I was hooked.  After taking part in a couple of century sportive rides I was looking for more of a challenge so I joined a road club.  After purchasing my racing licience  in March 2013 I took part in my first Criterium race and after numerous races and club 10 mile TT’s. I am now chasing down my 2nd Cat racing licence………………….

In June 2015 I completed my first middle distance triathlon and plan to do a full distance triathlon in 2016.

I was a typical football-mad youngster and enjoyed nothing more than watching my local team or having a Sunday kick-about with mates. As I reached my mid-teens I started to take an interest in other sports; my uncle is a cyclist/ triathlete and he encouraged me to join him and his friends on their weekly mountain bike sessions. I’m not too proud to say I’m not the best MTB handler, but I enjoy the thrill of being off-road and getting muddy – who doesn’t!? One bike led to another and very soon I was road-biking too; having been a strong swimmer since childhood it was then just a small (and fairly inevitable) step for me to take up triathlon.

I completed my first triathlon at Springfield in 1998, closely followed by an age group win at Burnham-on-Sea. I continued dabbling with triathlon for several years from here; trying desperately to balance this lifestyle with my discovery of beer! Once the initial draw of the pub had worn off I started to take my training more seriously, completing my first Ironman in 2005..….that was it – I was hooked!! I’ve now completed 11 Ironman races and gradually worked my PB down to sub-10 hours. My ultimate goal is to qualify for the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii but the field is super competitive and increasing every year!

Of all three disciplines I think it’s safe to say that cycling is my favourite – I love the freedom of being out on the road; the sociable nature of riding and the compulsory coffee/ cake stop en route. I still break the MTB out  several times each year for a bit of fun but road riding is what I enjoy most. After much determination, several crashes and an A&E stay I now have my Cat 3 race licence. Racing as part of a team is great fun but I also love the challenge and focus needed for time-trialling. To date I’ve completed 10, 25 and 50 mile TT races – every year I toy with the idea of a 12 hour TT with the ultimate aim of going for 24 hours…. one day I will sign up!
